GMAT

GMAT – Graduate Management Admission Test

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a Standardized, computer-adaptive test
that measures Verbal, Mathematical and Analytical writing skills. GMAT helps business schools
in assessing the potential of applicants for advanced study in Business and Management. Nearly
900 management institutes – Most of these being US based – give admission in the MBA program
on the basis of GMAT scores. The GMAT test is developed and administered by the US-based
Pearson VUE under the direction of the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC),
a non-profit organization of graduate business schools worldwide. For the conduct of the test,
Pearson VUE has appointed testing centers in over 100 countries. GMAT scores are by default
sent to 5 Business schools of your choice within 20 days after your test.

Eligibility

Prospective graduate applicants take the General Test. GRE test scores are used by admissions
or fellowship panels to supplement undergraduate records and other qualifications for graduate
study. The scores provide common measures for comparing the qualifications of applicants and
aid in evaluating grades and recommendations.

Registration

There are four ways to register:
• Online
• By Phone
• By Mail

Documents Required

If you requested and received an authorization voucher from ETS, you must take it with
you to the test center.
Take your admission ticket and photo ID to the test center.
D verification at the test center may include thumb printing, photographing, videotaping,
or other form of electronic ID confirmation. If you refuse to participate, you will not be
permitted to test and you will forfeit your test fee. This is in addition to the requirement
that you must present acceptable and valid identification.

Fee

US$250 for General Test fee and US$50 for Rescheduling fee

GMAT Test Format

The GMAT consists of four separately timed sections. The GMAT exam consists of three main
parts, the Analytical Writing Assessment, the Quantitative section and the Verbal section. The
GMAT tests your fundamental skills and does not require any subject-specific theoretical study.
The Quantitative section has two types of questions: Problem Solving and Data Sufficiency.
The Verbal Section has three types of questions: Sentence Correction, Critical Reasoning, and
Reading Comprehension. There are a total of 78 questions, 37 in Quantitative and 41 in Verbal.
These 2 sections have a time limit of 75 minutes each. The Analytical writing section consists
of two short essays to be written in 30 minutes each. The first is the Analysis of an Issue, in
which you need to analyze the issue presented and explain your views on it. The second essay is
Analysis of an Argument, in which a given argument has to be critically analyzed and evaluated.

For both the essays, the emphasis is on the “Analytical” part, and not on the “Writing” part. The
total test duration is around 4 hours.

GMAT Score Format

An official GMAT score report consists of four parts: Verbal Scaled Score (on a scale from 0 to
60); Quantitative Scaled Score (on a scale from 0 to 60), Total Scaled Score (on a scale from 200
to 800), Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) Score (on a scale from 0 to 6). The total score
is a scaled combination of the verbal and quantitative scaled scores, and thus reflects a student’s
overall performance on the multiple choice sections of the test. The AWA score is independent
of and has no impact on the total scaled score. Applicants can access GMAT scores electronically
or receive paper reports-they’re sent to the test taker and score-report recipients selected by the
test taker within three weeks of the test date. The score report will show all of the test taker’s
GMAT scores for the past five years. Test takers may print an Unofficial Score Report after they
finish the exam, but this does not include the AWA score and will not be accepted in lieu of an
Official Score Report. The Verbal and Quantitative scores range from 0 to 60. Scores below 9
and above 44 for the Verbal section or below 7 and above 50 for the Quantitative section are rare.
Total GMAT scores range from 200 to 800. Two-thirds of test takers score between 400 and 600.
The AWA score is an average of the two independent ratings for each section: Analysis of an
Issue and the Analysis of an Argument. These average scores can range from 0 to 6 in half point
intervals. Writing scores are computed separately from the scores for the multiple-choice sections
of the test and have no effect on the Verbal, Quantitative, or Total scores. The GMAT score
reports include the following background information: Country of citizenship, Gender, Date of
birth, Telephone number, Undergraduate institution, grade point average (GPA), major, and date
of graduation, intended graduate study, highest level of education attained.

Results

Within 4 to 6 weeks after you take the test, score reports will be sent to you and the score
recipients you designated.

GRE

GRE – Graduate Record Exams

Developed and Conducted by Educational Testing Service (ETS)-a subsidiary of the Graduate
Record Examination Board of the U.S.A, the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a
common prerequisite for all Graduate School applicants. The scores of this standardized,
computer adaptive format test helps graduate schools to assess the advanced study potential
of their prospective students. GRE test scores are used by admissions or fellowship panels to
supplement undergraduate records and other qualifications for graduate study. The scores provide
common measures for comparing the qualifications of applicants and aid in evaluating grades
and recommendations. ETS can send your GRE scores to four universities chosen by you. GRE
scores are valid for 5 years. GRE offers two kinds of Examinations to enable admissions panel to
assess the applicants and their aptitude towards their chosen fields of study – GRE General Test
and GRE Subject Test. Most applicants to Graduate Schools are generally asked to take the GRE
General test.

GRE General Test: Generally taken by prospective graduate students, this test measures Verbal
reasoning, Analytical and Critical Writing and Quantitative Reasoning skills of a candidate.

GRE Subject Test: This version of GRE exam assesses candidates’ knowledge level and
accomplishments in a specific field of study. Unlike the GRE General test, this test is available
only thrice in a year and can be taken only as the paper-based test. The scores of this test are
often required for doctoral programs in the US, though some universities require the GRE Subject
test scores for Masters-level programs too. The eight subjects in which the GRE subject test
is presently conducted are: Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biology, Chemistry,
Computer Science, English Literature, Mathematics, Physics and Psychology.

• Online
• By Phone
• By Mail
• In Person at GRE Resource Centers with local currency

Documents Required

If you requested and received an authorization voucher from ETS, you must take it with
you to the test center.
Take your admission ticket and photo ID to the test center.
D verification at the test center may include thumb printing, photographing, videotaping,
or other form of electronic ID confirmation. If you refuse to participate, you will not be
permitted to test and you will forfeit your test fee. This is in addition to the requirement
that you must present acceptable and valid identification.

Fee

US$180 for General Test fee and US$25 for Late Registration fee

GRE Test Format

Total time allotted for the Computer-adaptive GRE test is 3 hours, whereas for the Paper-based
test it is 3 ¾ hours. Analytical writing section always appears first in the test, followed by the
Verbal and Quantitative sections in any order. If there is a Research section, it always appears at
the end of the test.

Test format for computer-based test comprises of Analytical Writing section wherein candidates
have to choose one of the two essay topics as their Issue Task and complete the same within 45
minutes. The Analytical Writing section then requires candidates to answer One Argument Task
within 30 minutes. This Analytical Writing section is followed by a 30 minute Verbal reasoning
section with 30 questions and finally by another 30 minute section comprised of 28 Quantitative
reasoning questions.
The sections in the Paper based GRE General test are the same. The only changes are that there
are 2 sections each within the Verbal and Quantitative sections. The Verbal section comprises of
38 questions in each part to be answered in 60 minutes in total. The Quantitative Section has 30
questions in two parts to be answered in 60 minutes in total.

GRE Score Format

Computer-Based General Test:

Your scores on the Verbal and Quantitative sections of the computer-based General Test depend
on your performance on the questions given and on the number of questions answered in the time
allotted.

Because both of these sections are computer-adaptive, the questions presented are selected to
reflect your performance on preceding questions and the requirements of the test design. Test
design factors that influence which questions are presented to you include:

1. the statistical characteristics (including difficulty level) of the questions already answered
2. the required variety of question types
3. the appropriate coverage of content

For the computer-based Analytical Writing section, each essay receives a score from at least one
trained reader, using a six-point holistic scale. In holistic scoring, readers are trained to assign
scores on the basis of the overall quality of an essay in response to the assigned task. The essay
score is then reviewed by e-rater, a computerized program developed by ETS, which is being
used to monitor the human reader. If the e-rater evaluation and the human score agree, the human
score is used as the final score. If they disagree by a certain amount, a second human score is
obtained, and the final score is the average of the two human scores.

The final scores on the two essays are then averaged and rounded up to the nearest half-point
interval. A single score is reported for the Analytical Writing section.

The primary emphasis in scoring the Analytical Writing section is on your critical thinking and
analytical writing skills rather than on grammar and mechanics.

During the scoring process, your essay responses on the Analytical Writing section will be
reviewed by ETS essay-similarity-detection software and by experienced essay readers.

The GRE Program has recently implemented another review process of individual test
performance for the computer-based GRE General Test Verbal and Quantitative sections. The
purpose of the process is to analyze each test taker’s performance data to determine if the test
presented to the individual was an appropriate selection of test questions by the computer. It
appears that in a very small number of cases, the computer algorithm may not have functioned
as effectively as intended. As a result, ETS is offering these test-takers the option of taking a free
retest on the affected section only. In this optional retest effort, the GRE Program is attempting to
be as fair as possible to all examinees.

Paper-Based General Test:

For the Verbal and Quantitative sections of the paper-based General Test, a raw score is
computed. The raw score is the number of questions for which the best answer choice was given.

The raw score is then converted to a scaled score through a process known as equating. The
equating process accounts for differences in difficulty among the different test editions so a given
scaled score reflects approximately the same level of ability regardless of the edition of the test
that was taken.

For the Analytical Writing section, each essay receives a score from two trained readers, using a
6-point holistic scale. In holistic scoring, readers are trained to assign scores on the basis of the
overall quality of an essay in response to the assigned task. If the two assigned scores differ by
more than one point on the scale, the discrepancy is adjudicated by a third GRE reader.

Otherwise, the scores from the two readings of an essay are averaged. The final scores on the
two essays are then averaged and rounded up to the nearest half-point interval. A single score is
reported for the Analytical Writing section.

Three scores are reported on the General Test:
• a Verbal Reasoning score reported on a 200-800 score scale, in 10-point increments
• a Quantitative Reasoning score reported on a 200-800 score scale, in 10-point increments
• an Analytical Writing score reported on a 0-6 score scale, in half-point increments

Results

Within 4 to 6 weeks after you take the test, score reports will be sent to you and the score
recipients you designated.

IELTS Score Format

There is no pass or fail in IELTS. Candidates are graded on their performance, using scores from
1 to 9 for each part of the test – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The results from the
four parts then produce an Overall Band Score.

This unique 9-band system measures scores in a consistent manner – wherever and whenever the
test is taken. It is internationally recognised and understood, giving you a reliable international
currency. IELTS scores are valid for two years.

The IELTS 9-band scale

Each band corresponds to a level of English competence. All parts of the test and the Overall
Band Score can be reported in whole and half bands, e.g. 6.5, 7.0, 7.5, 8.0.

Band 9: Expert user: has fully operational command of the language: appropriate, accurate and
fluent with complete understanding.

Band 8: Very good user: has fully operational command of the language with only occasional
unsystematic inaccuracies and inappropriacies. Misunderstandings may occur in unfamiliar
situations. Handles complex detailed argumentation well.

Band 7: Good user: has operational command of the language, though with occasional
inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstandings in some situations. Generally handles
complex language well and understands detailed reasoning.

Band 6: Competent user: has generally effective command of the language despite some
inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstandings. Can use and understand fairly complex
language, particularly in familiar situations.

Band 5: Modest user: has partial command of the language, coping with overall meaning
in most situations, though is likely to make many mistakes. Should be able to handle basic
communication in own field.

Band 4: Limited user: basic competence is limited to familiar situations. Has frequent problems in
understanding and expression. Is not able to use complex language.

Band 3: Extremely limited user: conveys and understands only general meaning in very familiar
situations. Frequent breakdowns in communication occur.

Band 2: Intermittent user: no real communication is possible except for the most basic
information using isolated words or short formulae in familiar situations and to meet immediate
needs. Has great difficulty understanding spoken and written English.

Band 1: Non-user: essentially has no ability to use the language beyond possibly a few isolated
words.

Band 0: Did not attempt the test: No assessable information provided.

LSAT

LSAT – The Law School Admission Test

Law School Admission Council (LSAC) administers the Law School Admission Test-LSAT
which is a half-day, standardized test that attempts to measure logical and verbal reasoning
skills. It is administered four times a year at designated centers throughout the world. It is
required for admission to all American Bar Association approved law schools, most Canadian
law schools, and some other law schools as well. Many law schools require that the LSAT be
taken by December for admission. However, taking the test earlier in June or September is often
advised. The LSAT helps law schools make sound admission decisions by providing a standard
measure of acquired reading and verbal reasoning skills that law schools can use as one of several
factors in assessing applicants. The test consists of five 35-minute sections of multiple-choice
questions. Four of the five sections contribute to the test taker’s score.

Eligibility

All registrants who complete the test registration, pay the test fee in a timely way, and follow
published test rules may sit for the LSAT. It is your responsibility to understand the eligibility
requirements of the law schools to which you are applying before deciding whether to register for
the LSAT. If you register for the test and then determine that you are ineligible for admission to
your intended law school, no test- fee refund will be available.

Registration

There are three ways to register:
• Online
• By Phone
• By Mail

Documents Required

Items Needed for Admission to the Test Center -

Admission Ticket
Identification

Fee

The test fee is US$132 and the late registration fee is US$66

LSAT Test Format

Total time allotted for LSAT test is 3 hours and 30 minutes. The test consists of five multiple
choice question sections of 35 minutes each and an additional, non-scored thirty-minute writing
sample. Four of the five sections contribute to the test taker’s score. These sections include one
Reading Comprehension section, one Analytical Reasoning section and two Logical Reasoning
sections. The fifth section typically is used to pre-test new test questions. The placement of this
section, which is commonly referred to as the variable section, varies for each administration
of the test. The LSAT is scored on a scale from 120 to 180, with 180 being the highest possible
score. A 35 minute Writing sample is administered at the end of the test. LSAC does not score the
writing sample, but copies are sent to all law schools to which a candidate applies.

LSAT Score Format

The LSAT score reported for an individual is unique for each particular version of the exam.
The raw score, on the other hand, is a direct representation of the number of test questions the
individual answered correctly. With a total of 101 questions approximately on each LSAT, an
individual receives a single raw point score for each correctly answered question. The raw score
is then converted to a scaled score that falls between 120-the minimum LSAT score, and 180-the
maximum LSAT score.

Results

LSAT takers who have LSAC.org accounts will automatically receive their LSAT scores by e-
mail approximately three weeks after taking the test. This is the quickest way to obtain your
LSAT score, and there is no additional charge.
LSAC will send score reports by mail approximately four weeks after each test. Test takers who
have LSAC.org accounts can pay a one-time fee of $25 if they wish to obtain hard-copy mailings
of account information that is available online.

SAT

SAT – Scholastic Aptitude Test

The SAT is an international competitive exam that is accepted by most US universities and
colleges for admissions to bachelor programmes. Many colleges and universities use the SAT
as one of the indicators to admit students. SAT scores are also helpful in securing a scholarship.
While most universities accept SAT-I scores, there are many universities that also require you
to take the SAT-II. SAT is a compulsory test to secure admission in any undergraduate program
of any college of USA. This test is developed, managed and administered by College Entrance
Examination Board, based in USA. SAT is prepared and scored by the Educational Testing
Service. It is an approximately 4 hour long test. There are two types of SAT tests namely, SAT
Reasoning Test and SAT Subject Tests. The SAT test is used to evaluate a candidate’s critical
thinking and problem solving skills which would help to measure their overall ability and
potential to undertake the bachelor level study program.

USMLE

USMLE – The United States Medical Licensing Examination

The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is a three-step examination for
medical licensure in the United States and is sponsored by the Federation of State Medical Boards
(FSMB) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). The USMLE examination
program was designed in the late 1980s and introduced during the period 1992 to 1994. The
United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE®) is a three-step examination for
medical licensure in the United States and is sponsored by the Federation of State Medical Boards
(FSMB) and the National Board of Medical Examiners® (NBME®). The USMLE assesses a
physician’s ability to apply knowledge, concepts, and principles, and to demonstrate fundamental
patient-centered skills, that are important in health and disease and that constitute the basis of safe
and effective patient care.

THE THREE STEPS OF THE USMLE

Step 1 assesses whether you understand and can apply important concepts of the sciences basic to
the practice of medicine, with special emphasis on principles and mechanisms underlying health,
disease, and modes of therapy. Step 1 ensures mastery of not only the sciences that provide a
foundation for the safe and competent practice of medicine in the present, but also the scientific
principles required for maintenance of competence through lifelong learning.

Step 2 assesses whether you can apply medical knowledge, skills, and understanding of clinical
science essential for the provision of patient care under supervision and includes emphasis on
health promotion and disease prevention. Step 2 ensures that due attention is devoted to principles
of clinical sciences and basic patient-centered skills that provide the foundation for the safe and
competent practice of medicine.

Step 3 assesses whether you can apply medical knowledge and understanding of biomedical and
clinical science essential for the unsupervised practice of medicine, with emphasis on patient
management in ambulatory settings. Step 3 provides a final assessment of physicians assuming
independent responsibility for delivering general medical care.

Eligibility

To be eligible, you must be in one of the following categories at the time of application and on
the test day:

a medical student officially enrolled in, or a graduate of, a US or Canadian medical

USMLE Test & Score Format

When you take Step 1, Step 2 CK, or Step 3, the computer records your responses. After your
test ends, your responses are transmitted to the NBME for scoring. The number of test items you
answer correctly is converted to two equivalent scores, one on a three-digit score scale and one on
a two-digit score scale. Both scales are used for score-reporting purposes.

On the three-digit scale, most Step 1, 2 CK, or 3 scores fall between 140 and 260. The mean
score for first-time examinees from accredited medical school programs in the United States is
in the range of 210 to 230, and the standard deviation is approximately 20. Your score report
will include the mean and standard deviation for recent administrations of the examination. The
two-digit score is derived from the three-digit score. It is used in score reporting because some
medical licensing authorities have requirements that include language describing a “passing score
of 75.” The two-digit score is derived in such a way that a score of 75 always corresponds to the
minimum passing score.

For Step 2 CS, examinees are assessed on their data-gathering and communication skills
(including spoken English) by the standardized patients, and on their ability to complete an
appropriate patient note by physician raters. Performance on Step 2 CS is reported as pass or fail,
with no numerical score.

USMLE score reports and transcripts show your scores (for Step 1,
Step 2 CK, and Step 3) and an indication of whether you passed or failed (for all examinations).
The same information is sent to medical licensing authorities upon your authorization for their
use in granting the initial license to practice medicine.

Except as otherwise specified below, to receive a score on Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 3, you
must begin every block of the test: If you do not begin every block, no results are reported, and
the “incomplete examination” attempt appears on your USMLE transcript. If you register for but
do not begin an examination, no record of the test will appear on your transcript.

If your Step 1, Step 2 CK, or Step 3 examination is incomplete, you may request that a score
be calculated and reported, with all missed test items or cases scored as incorrect. This score
is likely to be lower than the score you would have achieved had you completed all sections
of the examination. If you receive notification that your examination resulted in an incomplete
attempt, contact the NBME in writing no later than 45 days after the date the notification is sent
to you if you would like further information on having the score calculated and reported. If you
decide to request calculation and reporting of your score, the score will appear on your USMLE
transcript as though it were complete; it will remain the permanent score for the examination
administration.

For Step 2 CS, if you leave the test early, or for some other reason you fail to carry out one
or more of the cases, your performance may be assessed on those cases completed. If this
assessment would result in a passing outcome no matter how poorly you may have performed
on the missed case(s), then a “pass” will be reported. If this assessment would result in a failing
outcome no matter how good your performance on the missed case(s), then a “fail” will be
reported. Otherwise, the attempt may be recorded as an “incomplete examination.”

If it is determined that you took a Step for which you were not eligible, results for that test may
not be reported or, if previously reported, may be revoked. Some examination materials are
included in the USMLE to enhance the examination system and to investigate the measurement
properties of the examinations. Such materials are not scored.

Results

When your scores are available, you will receive an e-mail notification from your registration
entity. Follow the instructions in the e-mail notification for accessing your USMLE score report.
Your score report will remain available for approximately 120 days from the date of e-mail
notification. Using password protection, you will be able to view, download, and print your score
report. Once the score report is removed from the website, your scores will be provided to you
only in the form of an official USMLE transcript. To obtain a transcript you will be required to
submit a form to your registration entity and to pay a fee.
