Scope of BDS/MDS

The introduction of new fields like periodontics (care of gums and the diseases that might afflict them), oral pathology (diagnosis for diseases that affect the mouth) and orthodontics (straightening and aligning teeth and jaws) have all enhanced the scope of the BDS course. These days, dentists perform surgery using a variety of techniques and procedures such as computers and magnetic resonance imaging. The dentists also have to educate patients about oral hygiene and ways to preserve a healthy mouth. Therefore the demand for dentists is increasing worldwide and is a very interesting field.

BDS

Introduction:
BDS is Bachelor of Dental Surgery. Modern Indian dentists earn the Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree (B.D.S.), which requires four years of study and one year of intern-ship.

Eligibility Criteria:

Candidate must have passed qualifying examination i.e. HSC (or equivalent) examination with the subject Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English.

Candidate must have passed in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English individually and must have obtained a minimum 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together at the HSC (or equivalent) examination.

Candidate belonging to backward classes must have passed in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English individually and must have obtained minimum 40% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together at the HSC (or equivalent) examination.

Duration : 4 calendar years, followed by one year paid rotating Internship in the Dental Colleges. For MBBS degree holder the duration of the course will be two years.

MDS

Introduction:
M.D.S. or Master of Dental Surgery is a postgraduate Dentistry course. The duration of Master of Dental Surgery is generally three years. Post graduate courses (Master of Dental Surgery. MDS) are also available in different specialities.

Eligibility Criteria:

The minimum qualification for this course is Bachelor of Dental Surgery (B.D.S) or an equivalent qualification recognized by the Dental Council of India.

Candidate not possessing a recognized Dental qualification should secure the prior approval of qualifications by the Dental Council of India before he can be admitted to the M.D.S. course of any University in India.

Duration : 3 years
