Scope of Nursing :
There was a time when professional nurses had very little choice of service because nursing was centered in the hospital & bedside nursing for private care etc. However, in today's scenario their career opportunities are more varied for a numbers of reasons. The lists of opportunities available in a hospital scenario are given under:
Staff Nurse provides direct patient care to one patient or a group of patients. They assist ward management and supervision.
Ward sister or Nursing Supervisor is responsible for the nursing care management of a ward or unit. They take complete charge of the ward, assign work to nursing & non-nursing personnel working in the ward, are responsible for the safety and comfort of patients in the ward and provide teaching sessions if it is a teaching hospital.
Department supervisor/Assistant Nursing Superintendent is responsible for the nursing care & management of more than one ward or units. Example – Surgical department and Out-patient department together.
Deputy nursing superintendent assists in the nursing administration of the hospital.
Nursing Superintendent is responsible for the safe & efficient management of hospital nursing services.
BSC in Nursing
B. Sc in Nursing is a four year degree course and the Indian Nursing Council prescribes the syllabus for the course. Students taking up this program can work in the hospital, community - nursing services. The aim of this program is to prepare graduates to assume responsibilities as professional, competent nurses and midwives in providing preventive, curative and rehabilitative services, who can make independent decisions in nursing situations, protect the rights of individuals in pursuit of health.
For admission to B. Sc. (Nursing) course, the candidate should have passed in the subject of Physics, Chemistry, Biology & English individually.
Be physically and mentally fit for admission.
Must have obtained 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, Biology & English taken together at the qualifying examination i.e. H.S.C./10+2 or ICSE or PUC.
Duration : 4 years
GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery)
General Nursing & Midwifery (GNM) is to prepare nurses with sound educational program in nursing and serve as a base for further professional education and specialization.
Minimum and Maximum age for admission will be 17 and 35 years.
10+2 class passed preferably Science (PCB) & English with aggregate of 40% marks.
10+2 in Arts (Mathematics, Biotechnology, Economics, Political Science, History, Geography, Business Studies, Accountancy, Home Science, Sociology, Psychology, Philosophy) and English Core/English, passing out from recognized Board under AISSCE/CBSE/ICSE/SSCE/HSCE or other equivalent Board with 40% marks.
Duration: 3 and ½ years
For Auxiliary Nurse & Midwife
Duration: 2 years
M.Sc in Nursing
This course helps in demonstrating basic skills in administration and leadership while working with other members of healthcare team. The course duration for M.Sc Nursing is 3 years.
The candidate should be a Registered Nurse and Registered midwife of equivalent with any State Nursing Registration Council.
The Minimum education requirements shall be the passing of: B.Sc. Nursing/B.Sc. Hons. Nursing/Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing with minimum of 55% aggregate marks.
The candidate should have undergone in B.Sc. Nursing / B.Sc. Hons. Nursing / Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing in an institution which is recognized by Indian Nursing Council.
Minimum one year of work experience after Basic B.Sc. Nursing.
Minimum one year of work experience prior or after Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing.
